Board of Directors – Job Descriptions

Chairman of the Board of Directors
Purpose: Conclude a 4-year track — thus improving the experience and consistency of NOWA leadership. Chair the board of directors meeting and provide assistance to other officers as warranted.

  • Serve on the board of directors during the NOWA annual board and membership meetings.
  • Participate in board discussions and decisions whenever requested or warranted.
  • Chair the annual board meeting, and vote only to break ties
  • Chair the nominating committee to solicit nominations for all available board positions
  • Serve as chairman of the Enos Bradner Award selection committee. Chairman of the Board becomes chairman of this committee for one year but also serves on the committee for an additional two years.
  • The committee will encourage NOWA members to offer names of individuals that may be considered for the award by writing a brief description about the award and submitting that information to the Newsletter Editor no later than January 20th
  • Endeavor to chair one other committee.
  • After one term, automatically retire.

President
Purpose: Continue a 4-year track through to the board chairmanship — thus improving the experience and consistency of NOWA leadership. Actively direct the operational affairs of NOWA, under supervision from the Board of Directors, and in coordination with the Executive Director. Supervise the performance of other officers and committees.

  • Serve on the board of directors during the NOWA annual board and membership meetings.
  • Participate in board discussions and decisions whenever requested or warranted.
  • Solicit and designate chairpersons for all committees.
  • Form or dissolve committees as necessary to address NOWA business and issues.
  • Produce a profession-related monthly president’s column for the NOWA newsletter.
  • Consider any requests from the membership, in coordination with the Executive Director.
  • Welcome the membership to the annual conference and to the annual banquet.
  • Run the annual membership meeting, in coordination with the Executive Director.
  • After one term, automatically succeed to chairman of the board.

Vice President
Purpose: Continue a 4-year track through the presidency and board chairmanship — thus improving the experience and consistency of NOWA leadership. Plan the conference program, in coordination with the Executive Director (who handles conference facilities and logistics).

  • Serve on the board of directors during the NOWA annual board and membership meetings.
  • Participate in board discussions and decisions whenever requested or warranted.
  • Chair the conference program planning committee.
  • Coordinate and oversee the conference program, events, and presenters.
  • Serve on the conference site selection committee.
  • Provide communications via the newsletter to keep members apprised of the conference schedule and agenda in a timely fashion.
  • Endeavor to write a minimum of one craft improvement article annually for the newsletter.
  • Act in the absence or disability of the president.
  • After one term, automatically succeed to the position of president.

2nd Vice President
Purpose: Begin a 4-year track to prepare for vice presidency, presidency, and board chairmanship — thus improving the experience and consistency of NOWA leadership. Help select the site for the conference for which you will plan the program. Become familiar with conference planning by assisting the Vice President.

  • Serve on the board of directors during the NOWA annual board and membership meetings.
  • Participate in board discussions and decisions whenever requested or warranted.
  • Serve on the conference site selection committee.
  • Serve on the conference program planning committee.
  • Endeavor to chair one committee, in an area of personal expertise; set obtainable goals and objectives and write a report after six months on progress and a follow-up report to be presented at the annual board meeting.
  • Endeavor to write a minimum of one craft improvement article annually for the newsletter.
  • Assist the vice president.
  • Act in the absence or disability of the vice president.
  • After one term, automatically succeed to the position of vice president.

Secretary/Treasurer
Position served by the Executive Director.

  • Develop an annual budget for approval by the NOWA Board of Directors.
  • Collect annual membership dues and all other revenues.
  • Process timely payment of invoices for all authorized purchases.
  • Maintain computerized records of all NOWA revenues and expenses.
  • Provide the chairman of the Finance Committee with detailed financial statements prior to the General Meeting.
  • Provide the NOWA Board of Directors with accurate financial reports of revenues and expenses.

Director

  • Serve on the board of directors during the NOWA annual board and membership meetings.
  • Participate in board discussions and decisions whenever requested or warranted.
  • Endeavor to chair one committee, in an area of personal expertise; set obtainable goals and objectives and write a report after six months on progress and a follow-up report to be presented at the annual board meeting.
  • Endeavor to write a minimum of one craft improvement article annually for the newsletter.
